Life in the United States Pony Club
by Valerie Conner, Black Oaks Pony Club

This part of winter is a bad time for nearly all pony clubs. With most of California flooding thanks to nonstop rain, riding seems to be a distant memory. Pony club lessons are continually being rained out, and we don’t even have to deal with snow like large parts of the country! I’ve spent most of the season cleaning rarely used tack and grudgingly studying pony club books and manuals.

After spending the summer whisking away any invisible dust and shampooing him at the mere thought of dandruff, I mourn at the sight of my mud covered horse. Soon, though, he will be reclipped, pulled, trimmed, bathed, conditioned, and polished to perfection, and his current backyard horse persona will be a thing of the past.

There has been a slight glitch in plans, as the B, HA, and A preparatory meeting I was planning to attend has been postponed. With any luck, it will be rescheduled soon and we can all obtain the pertinent information we need. I’m also looking into some equestrian sports psychology to help handle my nerves and focus. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m fine at regular shows and events, but pony club testings are still a completely different story.

My club isn’t sure yet what rallies we will be attending this year, except for the dressage rally which we have a tradition of attending. Hopefully, we’ll also be able to gather teams together for the eventing and dressage rallies. If not, I may still attend as a scratch rider because it’d be a good experience for my horse, Dash. He’s not very fond of being inspected by the horse management judges.
